Aliyar Dam


Aliyar Dam is a charming location surrounded by Anamalai Hills with wonderful natural views. Aliyar Dam is located in the Anamalai Hills of the Western Ghats. It is about 65 kilometres from Coimbatore in Valparai Mainroad. From Pollachi is about 25kms. and From Valparai is about 40 Kms.

In Aliyar Dam there is a park, garden, aquarium, play area, Boat House Park. Monkey Falls and The Temple of Consciousness are the tourist attractions.
It is located between Pollachi and Valparai. Built across Aliyar River between 1959 and 1969, the primary purpose the dam is to support irrigation.The view of the Anamalai range around the reservoir is a feast for the eyes and the view of the coconut groves from top of the dam is amazing. The dam offers a relaxing environment as the surrounding is beautiful with mountains and greenery all around. Children will enjoy the visit. The dam also offers boating services. A nominal entrance fee is charged for entry into the dam premises.
Once the picnicking at the dam is done, you can visit many other attractions in the neighbourhood like the Temple of Consciousness (located near dam entrance at Arutperunjothi Nagar), Monkey Falls (6 Km from the dam) and the Ambarambalayam Darga.
If you are looking forward to spend a night here, the forest rest house is a good option. There is even a treetop house, which is an ideal option for the adventurous.


History:
Aliyar lake receives water from Upper Aliyar Reservoir through the hydroelectric power station in Navamali and the Parambikulam reservoir through a contour canal. Aliyar dam, built as a part of Parambikulam aliyar project (PAP), retains a large reservoir. The dam is around 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) in length.

The lowest level outlet of the reservoir is 930 feet (280 m) above Mean Sea Level (MSL) and the canal intake is 980 feet (300 m) above MSL. The spillway is 1,040 feet (320 m) above MSL and the FRL (Full Reservoir Level) is 1,050 feet (320 m) above MSL. The maximum surface area is 48 hectares (120 acres) (1,600 acres). The volume of water at FRL is 3.864 Tmcft (88,705 acre feet (109,416,000 m3)). The maximum depth is 41 metres (135 ft) and the mean depth 16.8 metres (55 ft) . The volume development is 1.2 m. The highest inflow usually occurs during July and August.

It is connected by frequent buses from Pollachi. Most of the people visiting Valparai make a trip Aliyar Dam too

Palamalai, is a small hill near near the sub-urban areas of Coimbatore. From the center of the city, it is located at around 25 KM distance. One needs to go to the Mettuppalayam Road, Periyanayakan Pirivu, Kovanoor and Palamalai. Baralikkadu

Baralikadu is a small tribal village which is situated near Pillur dam. It is an undisclosed spot which inspires nature lovers. The way is a hilly terrain enriched with green vegetation with a pleasant climate providing many view points to have a awe for these scenes. The ride covers a distance of 5 km on the cool water with mountains and forest on either side gives us a rare sight. You can also stop by the banks to have a walk into the jungle as you like. Walking into the bushes and marshes, along some seasonal streams, enjoying fresh air really energising us, inhaling the smell of the flowers and so on. A nice bath in the running water with the pleasant breeze giving a cooling effect and a great relief. The spot is located at an easy destination reachable for people from Coimbatore, Tirpur, Ooty, Metupalayam, etc. Only on Saturdays and Sundays. Kovai Kutralam

Kovai Kutralam  is a scenic spot with a gentle waterfall originating on the Siruvani hill ranges. It is located on the Western Ghats mountain range that lies to the west of this city at a distance of about 35 kms from Coimbatore. The siruvani dam is just above this water fall and this place is under the control of forest department. Permission has to be sought from them to visit this Kovai Kutralam Falls. Limited bus service is available from the city and this area is out of bounds after 5 pm. This is the only place near Coimbatore where you find a nice enchanting waterfall. Kovai Kuttralam is a scenic waterfalls amidst a protected forest area near Coimbatore. It situated in the road that goes to Siruvani Dam from Coimbatore (Okkadam-Perur-Karunya). Its better to have our own mode of transport as government busses stop at the first check post (where one road goes towards Siruvani Dam and another towards Kovai Kuttralam) which is around 4 KM before the second one, beyond which
